Hoverboard Troubleshooting
The most common hoverboard problems and how to fix them at home: vibrations, beeping sounds, flashing red lights, charging issues and boards that won't switch on. If a fix doesn't work, our Auckland workshop is here to help.
1Lots of vibration when riding the hoverboard
Why it's probably happening
In ideal conditions you should not hear or feel any vibration from your hoverboard. If you do, there's improper distribution of pressure along the footpads, which stops the board self-balancing properly.
Also keep in mind the minimum weight requirement for riding is 25 kgs: lighter riders won't press the sensors evenly.
What you should do
Switch off the hoverboard and step off. Get back on with your feet placed in the indicated position, and bend your knees a little to distribute pressure evenly across all pressure pads. This should solve the problem.

2Is your hoverboard charging properly?
How charging works
Charging the hoverboard is as simple as charging your mobile phone. Plug the charger into a wall socket, then into the charging port on the hoverboard. A light on the charger comes on to show it's charging, and a red coloured light on the battery indicator confirms it. When fully charged, the red light turns green.
What you should do
To ensure battery longevity, do not charge for more than a couple of hours at a time: li-ion batteries perform best when charged to 80–90% of capacity.
Leaving it charging for hours on end leads to a swollen battery, which is not covered under warranty. Unplug once the light goes green.
3Beeping sounds and flashing red lights after a fall
Why it's probably happening
If you fell off the hoverboard or there was an unexpected dismount, the sensors get disturbed. That's what causes the continuous beeping and flashing red lights.
What you should do
Press the reset button (the power button) on the hoverboard: switch it off, place it level, and switch it back on. The noises and lights will stop.
4Continuous beeping while riding fast
Why it's probably happening
Our hoverboards are designed with consumer safety in mind. A built-in speed alarm beeps when you go faster than around 10 km/h to warn you before the self-balancing limit is reached.
What you should do
Nothing is wrong: just slow down a little until the beeping stops, then continue at that speed. The alarm cannot be overridden, and that's deliberate.
5Hoverboard won't switch ON
Why it's probably happening
The most common reason a hoverboard won't switch on is that the battery level is too low. Check the light on the battery indicator.
What you should do
Charge it for a couple of hours, then try switching it on. If it beeps, it's on. If it still won't power up, the battery or charger may need replacing: contact us and we'll diagnose it with you.
6Board tilts, spins or pulls to one side
Why it's probably happening
The gyroscopes have lost their level reference: common after a heavy knock, a fall, or being carried switched on. The board then thinks "level" is slightly tilted.
What you should do
Recalibrate: switch the board off and place it on a flat, level surface. Hold the power button for about 10 seconds until the lights flash, release, then switch it off and on again. That resets the gyros.
If one side still doesn't respond, a sensor or gyro board likely needs replacing: that's a quick job for our repair service.
7Battery drains much faster than it used to
Why it's probably happening
Li-ion batteries wear with age and charge cycles. Cold weather, rough terrain, heavier riders and long storage on empty also shorten each ride noticeably.
What you should do
If the board is a few years old and range has dropped well below the usual 18–20 km, it's usually time for a genuine replacement battery: we stock them for models going back years in our accessories range. Fit it yourself or have our Auckland workshop do it.
Safety note: never open the board to poke at the battery yourself, never use a non-genuine charger, and stop using any board that gets hot, smells odd, or has a swollen battery. Get in touch instead: those are the faults worth taking seriously.
