Frequently Asked Questions
Everything Kiwis ask us about hoverboards, segways and self-balancing scooters: safety, batteries, riding, payments and warranty. Can't find your answer? A real person in NZ is one message away.
Safety & riding
Can hoverboards be considered safe?
Hoverboards are completely safe to ride when you buy a properly certified board. They are designed with customer safety in mind: most of our products have speed limiters that cannot be overridden, plus built-in warning signals that alert you to any malfunction so you are safe in case of mishaps.
New Zealand also has strict protocols in place that stop hastily manufactured hoverboards from reaching the market. Only products that meet all standard requirements make it to your doorstep. Read more on our Safety Guarantee page.
Are hoverboards safe for children?
Yes, with a couple of sensible limits. There is a lower weight limit on every hoverboard: riders should weigh at least 25 kilograms so the board's sensors register them properly and respond safely.
For riders under 16, we recommend adult supervision to lower the chance of injury from mis-operation, and a helmet plus knee and elbow pads for anyone still learning.
How easily can I learn how to ride a hoverboard?
Hoverboards are ridiculously easy to ride. There is a small learning curve, which most riders overcome within an hour: forward and reverse motion comes quickly, while manoeuvring and turning take a little longer. All-inclusive, a couple of hours is usually enough to master the hoverboard.
Can a hoverboard handle uphill and downhill rides?
Yes. The hoverboards and segways we sell are capable of handling inclined roads. The motors are quite powerful and will help you climb an incline without extra effort, and they also help you control your speed when riding down a decline. Most models handle gradients up to around 15 degrees.
Can hoverboards handle damp or wet weather?
Our hoverboards are IP54 water resistant, which means they are fit for light splashes and dust, and should survive light use in damp conditions. They were not built for wet-weather riding though.
Do not ride through puddles or in heavy rain, as water ingress can cause irreparable damage to the battery and electronics, and water damage is not covered by warranty.
How well does the hoverboard absorb shocks?
There is no built-in suspension mechanism. The hoverboard absorbs light shocks during normal operation and handles surface irregularities up to about half an inch (just over 1 cm), and your knees naturally act as an efficient suspension when riding. For the smoothest, safest ride, stick to clean, even surfaces, or choose an 8.5" off-road model with larger tyres for rougher ground.
Are segway scooters banned? Will they be banned in future?
No. Segway scooters and hoverboards are seen as items of leisure, and in some cases transport, and their popularity keeps growing. Standards exist to regulate the quality of these machines, and past restrictions have only ever targeted sellers of faulty, uncertified equipment.
Hoverboards NZ sources its hoverboards and segway scooters only from trusted suppliers, and every product we sell meets the required standards, so you can buy with confidence.
Batteries & charging
What batteries do the hoverboards use?
Every hoverboard ships with everything required in the box, including a high-grade lithium-ion battery and its matched charger. The battery takes only a couple of hours to charge fully, and on a full charge you can ride for around 18–20 km depending on rider weight and terrain.
Batteries are covered under warranty until their normal life has expired. Genuine replacement batteries are always in stock in our accessories range.
How should I charge and care for the battery?
Charge for about two hours at a time and unplug once full: overcharging shortens battery life. Always use the charger supplied with your board, charge on a hard surface, and never leave it charging overnight or unattended. If you won't ride for a few weeks, store the board with a partial charge in a cool, dry place.
Orders, delivery & payment
What payment methods do you offer?
Full payment is required before your product is dispatched from our warehouse. We accept all major credit and debit cards through our secure payment gateway, plus Afterpay and Laybuy so you can ride now and pay later. Direct bank transfer (DBT) is also available on request.
All card transactions are processed by secure, PCI-compliant payment gateways. In a few situations we may ask for an identity check, purely to confirm the order was placed by the original card holder.
How fast is delivery, and what does it cost?
Shipping is free on orders over $340. Below that, delivery is charged by parcel size and shown at checkout before you pay: small accessories from $6.99, karts $9.99, hoverboards $14.99 nationwide. Orders are dispatched from our Auckland warehouse, typically within one business day, and delivery takes around 3–5 business days depending on where you are in the country. Full details in our Shipping Policy.
Can I track my order?
Yes. As soon as your order is dispatched you'll receive an email with your tracking number, so you can follow it right to your doorstep.
Warranty, returns & repairs
Do you offer returns and warranty?
Yes. Every hoverboard comes with a 12 month warranty against manufacturing faults, and you can extend that to 3 years with our Care Plan. See our Return and Refund Policy for full details.
Changed your mind? Unused items in original packaging can be returned within 10 business days of delivery; you cover the return freight and an admin fee may apply. Faulty or damaged-on-arrival items are repaired, replaced or refunded at our cost. Your rights under the Consumer Guarantees Act apply on top of all of this.
Do you repair hoverboards and stock spare parts?
Yes: this is one of the things that sets us apart. Our Auckland workshop repairs hoverboards, and we stock genuine spare parts including batteries, chargers, motherboards and wheels, even for models we sold years ago. Visit our Repair Services page or get in touch with what's wrong and we'll take it from there.
How do I make a warranty claim?
Simple: contact us with your order number or invoice, a photo or short video of the issue, and a couple of lines describing what happened and the circumstances. Most claims are resolved with a repair or replacement part from our Auckland workshop, handled here in NZ, not overseas.
